Mumbai: Final-year students, who recently wrote the under-graduate semester exams, claim they are seeking internship opportunities during their summer vacation break to help them secure jobs. However, the students are not relying on campus placements since fewer companies are conducting campus interviews. The students of Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), Business Administration (BBA), Mass Media (BMM) and Accounting and Finance (BAF) are seeking an internship during the summer vacation, hoping the training will help them secure a good job in their respective fields instead of applying directly for a job without any work experience.
The students claim internships are necessary before landing a job, as their placements and experience also contribute to the marks. Jheel Mehta, a student, said, “If we have chosen a professional course, like BMS or BMM, then we have to do a couple of internships before we actually apply for a job. We cannot directly secure a job, as companies prefer a candidate with work experience. Finding a job in creative field as a fresher is difficult .”
Summer internships help them save time and gain experience, said final-year students. Tarun Khajrate, a student, said, “We have completed our course. The next thing is job hunting and landing a job, before our results are out. We are using this summer vacation to gain a first-hand experience of the industry through small-time jobs.”
Teachers say recent trend has witnessed a decline in students relying on campus placements. Kavita Yadav, a teacher, said, “The students don’t rely on campus interviews anymore. They look for jobs on their own. Every year, the number of students applying for campus recruitment has been been on a decline. They do internships and look for a job, pursuing their studies, so they don’t have to wait until their course is over when the campus interviews are held.”
