Coconut vendor killed as car rams into his shop
MUMBAI: A coconut vendor breathed his last after he was hit by a speeding Volkswagen in which five college students were seated. The car rammed into his shop near Juhu beach on Juhu-Tara Road during the early hours of Saturday. Accused Vrushad Juneja, (18), was arrested by the Santacruz police for causing death due to negligence. According to the cops, Juneja took a sharp turn at a high speed following which he failed in controlling his vehicle and the car crashed into the coconut shop. The medical check-up revealed that the accused were not drunk at the time of the incident. Victim, identified as Mohammad Rashid (50), was sleeping at the time of the incident. Rashid was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The car further crashed on to the compound wall of a beach garden hotel. The five occupants included three women, all residents of Juhu. They were out for a long drive when the accident took place.
Child labourers rescued from units, hotels
MUMBAI: The Social Service Branch of Mumbai Police conducted a raid on Saturday afternoon and rescued 21 child labourers, working in hotels and shoe- making units in Worli area. The cops arrested 11 accused, supposed to be the owners of the units. Six teams of SS Branch, led by Assistant Police Commissioner, Feroze Patel, along with the officials from Worli police in a joint operation, conducted a raid on hotels and small-scale units, located on Veer Jijamata Nagar, near Dr E Moses Road. The raid was conducted on Saturday at around 12.30 pm over a tip- off given to the officials after which 21 children who were found below 16 years of age were sent to Children’s Home in Dongri. The cops 11 owners were placed under arrest.
Film action director attacked
MUMBAI: Bollywood action director Tinu Verma’s cousin brother, Mahendra Verma (54), was arrested by the Amboli police officials for allegedly attacking Tinu over a car parking dispute on Saturday, the police said. Tinu and Mahendra, both residents of New Desai Villa in Goregaon, had a dispute over parking in their society, where they have been living for several years. Ten days back Tinu, also the secretary of the society, had allegedly made some alterations in the car parking in New Desai Villa, following which the duo had a heated argument which turned violent. Tinu in his given statement to the police said that he was allegedly beaten up by Mahendra on Friday night.
