Mumbai: The Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of the Mumbai crime branch nabbed an extrotionist trying to usurp Rs 10 lakh from a South Mumbai builder. The builder had been receiving threat calls and SMSes at odd hours from one Shahid Lala who demanded Rs 10 lakh ‘for the safety and security of his (the complainant’s) family members’.
The victim then approached the crime branch and a case was registered at the Worli Police Station. Lala had asked the builder to come near a mall in Hiranandani Gardens, Powai. The AEC laid a trap around the said place, with officers dressed as rickshaw drivers and office-goers. In a swift operation, the two accused were taken into custody when they admitted to their crime.
An arrest was made within 24-hours of registration of the offense and the two, aged 32 and 34 respectively, were handed over to the Worli Police station. One accused is an auto driver and the other is a scrap dealer and according to a statement issued by the AEC, they found the builder’s name from his company’s construction site.
