Mira Road : Even memorials are falling prey to illegal encroachments in Bhayandar. Standing testimony to such neglect is a martyrs’ memorial plaque outside the railway station in Bhayandar (east). Worse, the plaque is being encroached upon by road side vendors and stall owners to display wares thus hiding it from public view.
The memorial is raised on a plinth in marble with a plaque bearing a brief text in reminisce of seven martyrs who fell to police bullets during a rail-roko agitation on February 5, 1985 within meters of where the memorial is now located.
The apathy was brought to the notice of Leader of House in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) who said, “I will definitely look into the matter and ensure that the memorial does lose its glory and honour.”
After a hunger strike had failed to attract attention of authorities, protestors had held up the Rajdhani Express to highlight the lack of trains to Bhayandar.
