Health experts emphasise on boiling of water, maintaining hygiene
Mumbai : After Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria was found in the water samples of street food stalls, city health experts claim that even the tap water used in kitchen homes is not safe and can contain E. coli. They added that since the tap water comes from BMC, there is a possibility that the water is not purified and can contain small bacteria which can be harmful for human consumption. Therefore, they have emphasised on boiling of water before using for kitchen purposes or drinking.
City doctors informed that E. coli is a bacilli which is present in contaminated water. Further, they added that when one consumes contaminated water, they can fall prey to water-borne diseases.
Doctors informed that the after-effects of consuming contaminated water are that people suffer from nausea, stomach-ache and vomiting which are the early symptoms of gastroenteritis.
Shedding more light on the issue, Dr Shahid Bharmare, consultant general physician at Kohinoor Hospital said, “E.coli bacteria are caused in water which is not purified and cleaned regularly. The bacterium is known to cause illnesses such as gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract problems. However, it can lead to serious diseases such as acute renal failure and blood disorders. This is because during gastro, people become dehydrated and their blood pressure also goes down which causes complications leading to kidney damage.”
Health experts have asked people to follow certain precautionary measures in order to protect themselves from water-borne diseases. They advised people to boil their water at regular intervals before consumption, maintaining hygiene by hand-washing and by avoiding outside junk food.
