Drunk driving: Auto driver gets a month’s jail term

Mumbai : An auto rickshaw driver was sentenced to one month imprisonment by the Metropolitan Court on Thursday after he was caught for drunk driving. This is one of a longest term ever given to any accused in drunk driving case in the city.

The accused identified as Vijay Gupta was caught drunk on Wednesday midnight by the Malad Traffic Division while the accused was trying to escape a check post. He was taken into custody and was produced in the Borivali Metropolitan Court. The court sent him to imprisonment for a month, which is one of the highest punishments ever in drunk driving crime.

Officials from the Traffic police department informed that this is the second time the accused was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Last time, he was nabbed by the Kandivali Traffic police and was fined Rs 2,500 along with a day-long imprisonment. Officials also informed that there are chances that the court may suspend Gupta’s license for three months for his crime.
