Mumbai :  Many a revellers across the city may have an additional reason to cheer on New Year’s eve: The Mumbai traffic police has asked all establishments which serve liquor to provide drivers to the overly tipsy to ferry them home.

The officials from Mumbai Traffic police are in talks with the owners of these establishments. Letters have been issued where in it will be the duty of the security of an eatery to make sure that an overly drunken person is not at the wheels.

The Mumbai Traffic police will be conducting drives in the city to check people for alcohol and rash driving. If a person is arrested on a drink and drive charge, not only him but also the establishment, which permitted him to drive, will be prosecuted.

The availability of driver is of utmost importance in cases of inebriated customers who do not have one. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Brijesh Singh said, “Letters have been sent to the establishments to make sure that people who have consumed alcohol are not at the wheels. There is a certain personal liberty that cannot be curtailed but these steps will certainly help in reducing drink and drive cases.”

The traffic police will maintain a vigil all over the city for alcohol and rash driving. There will be checking at various points from 10 PM to 1 PM on a daily basis in the run-up to the New Year.

Subhash Nilewad, DCP (South Zone), said, “We have identified certain sites close to watering holes where cases of rash driving are rampant. These are the places that will be under the scanner during the drive against drunk and reckless driving. These ‘night life’ pockets have a large number of hotels and liquor shops which will be checked.”
