Drivers Dead, Passengers Hurt As Two Auto Collide

Mumbai : Two auto rickshaw drivers were killed and two women passengers injured in a case of negligent and rash driving in Kandivali after one of the drivers rammed his rickshaw into the other.

The incident occurred at 1:30 am on Monday near Sanchaiti Hospital on Akurli Road, Kandivali east. The alleged negligent driver was driving on the wrong lane in a rash manner which caused the accident.

The deceased have been identified as Krishna Gupta (21), who was driving on the wrong lane and Sailesh Shigwan (29). The two women were travelling in Shigwan’s rickshaw. The injured victims have been identified as Sangeeta Singh (35) and her 15-year-old daughter.

Gupta was allegedly driving in a rash and negligent manner when the incident occurred. “Gupta was heading to the highway from Kandivali station while Sailesh was bringing the two women in his rickshaw from the opposite direction towards Kandivali station. Both the vehicles collided. The drivers died whereas the passengers were injured in the accident. Both the drivers were taken to a hospital nearby where they were declared brought dead,” said Ravindra Patil, senior police inspector of the Samta Nagar police station.

Gupta succumbed to head injuries while Shigwan succumbed to chest injuries and bone fractures. The two women were rushed to Shatabdi Hospital where they were given medical treatment before being discharged. Sangeeta suffered severe injuries to her nose and chin while her daughter fractured her wrist.

A case has been registered against Gupta under sections 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
