Mumbai : An ATM cash van driver fled with the vehicle and Rs 1.28 crore in it on Friday afternoon when the other employees of the bank were busy loading money in an ATM kiosk in Trombay. The accused rode the van from Trombay to Matunga, cleared it of all the cash and left it near Don Bosco church.

The accused, identified as Amar Singh, had been working for an agency, Logicash Solutions Pvt Ltd that provides banks with cash management solutions. The company is based in CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai and Singh had been working for it for the past seven to eight months. The money in the cash van belonged to Central Bank of India and was being distributed to its various ATM kiosks. The cash van had left from CBD Belapur with Rs 1.34 crore and the ATM kiosk in Trombay was its first stop.

“On Friday, the van had arrived at the ATM kiosk in Trombay on the Sion Trombay Road to load Rs 16 lakh. Three employees of the bank and an unarmed guard, who were in the van, went inside to load the money in the ATM machine. At that time, Singh, taking advantage of being alone, drove the van away,” said senior police inspector Ansar Pirzade of Trombay police station.

After Singh fled with the van, it was traced in Matunga by the police. “The company, after Singh fled, had alerted the police after which they started patrolling the area around Sion. The van was discovered by the police during their patrolling and was seized. A search of the van revealed that there was no cash inside. Singh had fled with the cash,” another officer privy to the case said.

Four teams have been formed by the Trombay police, where the case has been registered, to trace Singh, who is a resident of Navi Mumbai and is suspected to be between 28 to 30 years old. Police are

probing if any of the other three employees and the guard could be involved in the crime and are questioning them, while the hunt for Singh is on.
