Mumbai: A Vile Parle woman has approached Juhu Police, accusing her in-laws of harassing her for dowry. She has also accused her father-in-law of outraging her modesty during an altercation between her and other family members. A case was registered on February 26, but police are yet to make any arrests.
The 29-year-old woman has complained, except for the first two years after her marriage in 2007, her marital life had been full of discord, with daily fights and altercations with her in-laws. In 2009, the woman’s in-laws started harassing her, calling names and picking fights over no reason, following which they often asked her to return to her maternal home or get money from parents. When she refused to give in to demands, they assaulted her, she alleged in her complaint.
At 7am on February 26, the woman and her mother-in-law had a hearted argument over a petty issue, following which the elderly woman began abusing the complainant. Taken aback by the sudden rude and uncalled-for behaviour, the woman locked herself in the bedroom, and wept for hours.
Her in-laws kept pounding the door, with her sister-in-law and husband too joining them. Her son got scared with the noise and opened the door, at which point the whole family allegedly barged into the room and a verbal fight ensued. A police officer said, “During their verbal duel, the woman’s father-in-law pulled her away from the window, which accidentally broke open a button of her nightgown, causing her embarrassment.
We have lodged a case of subjecting a married woman to cruelty (section 498A) of the IPC against the family, and a case of outraging modesty of a woman (section 354) against the woman’s father-in-law.” No arrests have been made so far, as the statements of all parties are yet to be recorded.
