Commuters will soon be able to access high speed Internet,  as RailTel and Google join hands to install Wi-Fi facility

Mumbai : By November, the commuters at the Mumbai Central railway station will be able to access high speed Internet, as it will be equipped with a Wi-Fi facility. This development is the result of a tie-up between the RailTel, a PSU under the railway ministry, and Internet giant Google.

“It will take around 45 days to set up the Wi-Fi facility. We are working towards making it accessible to commuters from the first week of November,” said BS Tahim Executive Director of RailTel.

The Wi-Fi provided by Google will be a high-speed network capable of delivering HD videos and a user will be able to download a full movie within 4 minutes, stated a statement issued by RailTel.  The commuter will be able to surf the Internet for free for the initial 30 minutes. According to the MoU, there will be 400 railway stations across India which will be equipped with the Wi-Fi facility.

A similar facility with was initiated by RailTel at CST railway station where commuters had to register their mobile numbers following which One Time Password (OTP) was generated. Using the OPT, commuters could use the services on the registered mobile number.

“The Wi-Fi that is to be installed at Mumbai Central will work on the similar way like it is working at the CST station,” added Tahim.
