The Boisar police on Thursday said that a detailed inquiry will be conducted with the family members of Neha Mahato, the 21-year-old woman who was allegedly shot dead by her ex-boyfriend on Wednesday. After killing Neha in broad daylight, a frenzied Srikrishna Yadav, 26, fled but was hit by a military truck. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The police’s preliminary investigation states that Srikrishna deliberately came in front of the vehicle to commit suicide.

The woman's body has been sent to the JJ Hospital for post-mortem, said the police, adding that her family will be inquired soon. “The pistol was shot right on the victim’s head. Point blank. Things will be clearer as we receive the post-mortem report,” said senior inspector Suresh Kadam.

In her police statement, Neha's mother said that the family was against her relationship with Srikrishna as he refused to marry her, even after being together for over a year. “He was trying to convince her not to end the relationship but she didn’t agree because of her family. This might be the reason behind Srikrishna's anger,” said a police source, while doubting it to be a pre-planned murder.

“The fact that a local man has a pistol is suspicious. Whether he had planned this earlier and from where he acquired the pistol will be inquired, too,” he added.

Meanwhile, the police have sent the pistol for forensics analysis, and are also verifying the weapon's legality. As of now, a case has been filed against Srikrishna under the Indian Penal Code section 302 along with the relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
