Mumbai : A close aide and a family member of underworld don Chhota Shakeel has been arrested by crime branch officials. The accused identified as Salim Ibrahim Qureshi (40) alias Salim Fruit was arrested by the Dubai police and was deported to Mumbai where Anti Extortion Cell officials took charge of him.

Qureshi is the brother-in-law of Chhota Shakeel and been part of the D-company since many years. He assisted both Shakeel and Dawood, before the 1993 bomb blasts in their underworld activities. Sources informed that after Dawood and Shakeel fled to Dubai, Qureshi followed them a few years later.

“He handled the business in the city for a few years after they left. In 2004, his aides under his instructions started threatening a doctor and extorted upto Rs 25 lakh from him. His aides were caught red-handed while accepting Rs 10 lakh from the complainant after we laid a trap,” said an AEC officer.

During interrogation, it was revealed that the extortion calls were being made under the direction of Qureshi but by then he had gone underground. “Recently, we heard that he was conducting his business from Dubai and we started investigating. Sometime later, we were informed that the Dubai police have detained him and are deporting him,” he added.

After taking charge of Qureshi, the police produced him in Court and he has been remanded to custody till March 8. Qureshi has been charged under relevant sections of the IPC.
