Mumbai : Two teenagers from Delhi who eloped and came to Mumbai are now in the childrens’ remand home in Dongri after police noticed them loitering at CST.

The two had run away from home, travelled half-way across the country and came to Mumbai to study together and make their careers. Only they were detained by the railway police before they could set foot out of the station.

According to Police Inspector Ravindra Dalvi of the Government Railway Police (GRP) at CST Neelam Gupta and Ravi Mishra, 17-year-old students of Mount Abu International School knew each other for a year. Both were in the same class in 11th standard studying in the science stream. However, when their parents came to know about their friendship, they objected to it and prohibited them from talking to each other.

As luck would have it, the two came across a fellow teenager Shruti Patil, a resident of Nashik, on the microblogging website Twitter. Patil was looking for an apartment in Mumbai and wanted roommates to share it with – a window of opportunity for the couple in Delhi. As soon as Gupta and Mishra got the chance, they eloped with plans to live, study and make their careers in Mumbai on August 22.

Mishra, whose father is a government officer, had taken money with him to sustain them. The couple first traveled to Itarsi in Madhya Pradesh, then to Goa, then Pune and then finally came to Mumbai on August 29.

“We noticed them in the waiting area of the main line, and as they looked suspicious questioned them. They were making stories and lying blatantly, so we detained them,” said Dalvi. An inspection of their bags revealed marksheets of CBSE 10th standard. “Mishra also had around Rs 4000 with him,” Dalvi said.

On inspecting their mobiles the police found the number of the girl from Nashik. After continuous questioning, the two finally gave in and told the real story. The police also spoke to the girl from Nashik who confirmed that they had arranged to live together, but was unaware about their elopement. “We contacted both their parents. Gupta’s father is an ice factory owner and has filed a case of kidnapping against the boy at the Shalimar Bagh police station in Delhi. Meanwhile, the couple has been remanded in custody at the shelter in Dongri,” Dalvi said.
