Mumbai: Mumbai University on Wednesday came up with a new ‘reason’ for the delay on their part in declaring results of more than 20 faculties. This time, the varsity has blamed ‘Bakri Eid’ and ‘Ganpati Visarjan’ for further delaying the announcement of results. Earlier, the varsity had given the excuse of Ganpati festival and the city’s deluge, apart from poor internet for the delay.
Meanwhile, the HC has asked the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) cell to extend the deadline of form submissions for the admissions to law colleges till September 19. A division bench of Justice Anoop Mohta and Justice Bharati Dangre was informed that results of at least 12 faculties are pending as the assessment work is yet to be completed.
Explaining the delay, the varsity’s counsel Rui Rodrigues, said, “There were continuous holidays in the last one week due to Bakri Eid followed by the Ganpati Visarjan. Teachers did not turn up for assessment work which led to further delay in correcting the answer sheets.”
“We have not hired robots that everything would be done within a short period. The entire system (assessment) is being looked after by humans. There are glitches and we are trying our best to fix them. The teachers, who have been crowding the courtroom, must go and correct the answer sheets, so that all the work is completed,” Rodrigues argued.
Rodrigues also told the judges that out of the 477 courses’ examinations it held in May, nearly 461 results are declared as on date. He also told the judges that the results for the Bachelors in Banking and Insurance (BBI) would be announced by Wednesday evening and the rest graduate level course like the Bachelors in Accounts and Finance (BAF) would be declared by September 13.
Meanwhile, advocate SS Talekar appearing for one of the students, urged the judges to impose a cost of Rs 1 crore on the varsity for each day delay on their part. However, the judges refused to impose such a hefty fine. Justice Mohta said, “Compensation is not the solution we are concerned with results of the students. Let them (varsity) first concentrate on declaring results compensation part can be seen later.” Accordingly, the matter has been adjourned till September 22.
