Mumbai: A 20-year-old woman, who aspired for an airline job, found herself a victim of cyberfraud. Lured by promises of getting recruited as a cabin crew member, she paid a total of Rs 46,500 for an identity card, a uniform and processing fees, as demanded by the fraudster on an online portal, only to be left grounded. Police said, the woman, a Cuffe Parade resident and an FYBA student, uploaded her profile on an online job portal, after passing her HSC exam last year.
In August, she started receiving calls about her profile having been selected for an airline job. “A fraudster told her she had been selected to join as a cabin crew member at the Mumbai international airport. Excited, she accepted the offer, following which she received a letter confirming her appointment,” said a police officer.
The fraudster then called her thrice, first asking her to pay for the uniform, then for the identity card and processing fees. “In all, the woman paid Rs 46,500, which she transferred to an account number given by the accused. We suspect her data was robbed from the portal where she uploaded it,” said the police officer.
By December 2018, when the job failed to materialise, the woman decided to lodge a written complaint at the Cuffe Parade police station but police did not register a First Information Report (FIR) then. After investigation, a case was registered two days ago under the section for cheating (420) and different sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000 under the Indian Penal Code.
