Mumbai: Three commuters, including a woman, fell from an overcrowded train between Mumbra and Kalwa on Wednesday, around 10am.

This was because of the utter chaos brought on by the fact that on a working day, Central Railway decided to operate on a Sunday schedule (30 per cent fewer services).

One of the victims was identified as 40-year-old Najmeen Mohamad Ebrahim Shaikh, a resident of Mumbra; the others were Nasir Shaikh and Nikhilesh Kubal.

“The three of them fell due to heavy rush in the CSMT-bound slow local, as they were trying to enter a coach which was already packed, with commuters standing on the footboard.

The victims were immediately attended to by Railway Police Force (RPF) Constable Ram Nikam and Government Railway Police (GRP) KLV PN Rajpure. ‘‘For further treatment, they have been shifted to Kalwa’s Shivaji Maharaj hospital,” said a senior GRP official.

Railway officials said Najmeen, who suffered head, hand and leg injuries, was admitted to Kalwa Hospital. The two others were discharged after they were administered first aid.

Najmeen said, "I became unconscious after falling off the train. It was bursting at the seams at Mumbra station. I was anxious to board it as I thought the others too would be equally crowded.”

In another incident, two women fainted at the Thane railway station after feeling suffocated in the surging crowds. According to a GRP official, there was overcrowding at all CR stations during the morning peak hours.

“The women were waiting at the station, clearly uncomfortable and fidgety. Suddenly, two of them fainted on the platform. Other commuters immediately brought them to the emergency medical room and they were treated,” said the official.

Meanwhile, stone pelting incidents were reported at two different railway stations on Wednesday morning. A 25-year-old woman was injured after an unknown person threw a stone at a local train.

The incident took place at around 10.10am on a CSMT- bound fast local. Another stone-pelting incident was reported at Vidyavihar station.

The woman, Samiksha Satish Chalke, a resident of Diva, was hit by a stone in her stomach between Vikhroli and Ghatkopar, as she was standing near the footboard in a jam-packed ladies coach.

“She was immediately attended to by the railway and the GRP staff. Primary medical treatment was given to her by the on-duty ambulance doctor. Later, she was shifted to the Rajawadi hospital for further treatment,” said a GRP official.

A doctor from the hospital said Chalke had sustained minor injuries on her stomach and was discharged after treatment.
