Mumbai : The conversion from DC to AC, far from bringing any respite to the commuters, has caused Central Railway (CR) heavily when it comes to maintaining punctuality of trains.

The commuters are likely to continue facing disruptions for another one week until the work of replacing the over head wires is taken up in full swing.

The overall punctuality of trains including those running on the harbour line and mainline has dropped down to 75 per cent.

Moreover, on an average there are about 12 to 13 cancellations of trains each day.

However, railway officials have put the onus for poor punctuality on various factors including level crossing gates and alarm chain pulling which affect the train operations.

A senior official from CR stated that on an average that are four to five cases of chain pulling in suburban division which causes that particular train to delay and have a domino effect on other trains.

While three level crossing gates, one each at Thakurali, Diva and Kalwa, are resulting in delays.

Divisional Railway Manager of CR, Amitabh Ojha, said, “Nearly 50 trains get delayed each day between Thakurli and Diva alone. There are separate instances of damage to the level crossing gates at these junctions.”

Commuters to be made aware of abrupt halt of local trains

Central Railway in the next one month will be putting up voice recorded announcement system in the train which will keep commuters aware if the train is stuck due to delay. In case if the train had come to an abrupt halt in between two sections, the motorman will ensure that commuters are told if there is any technical error which is causing the delay.

“It will be a pre-recorded voice which will play each time the train comes to halt due to a technical failure so that commuters are informed about it,” said Amitabh Ojha.

The idea is to keep people informed about what is causing the delay. The device will be first implemented in 56 Siemens rakes and then in the remaining ones.
