Mumbai : The condition of municipal schools is already poor in the city. Although the BMC says it is taking measures to improve the poor condition of its schools, provide more facilities, better infrastructure, better quality of education and teachers etc, the civic body is continuously seen to be failing in this direction.
In 2014-15, 166 out of 277 BMC corporators did not raise even a single question on education. The education committee of the BMC raised only 58 questions in a whole year on issues related to education in the city. There were only five corporators who asked more than four questions and 32 corporators asked only one question on issues regarding education.
Nitai Mehta, the founder of Praja, said, “If we want to make this country a knowledge economy and programmes like Digital India, Smart Cities and Skill India a success, the basic education of the country should be improved, especially at the primary level. Elected representatives should raise issues of education more at the designated forums.”
