Palghar : It took destruction of more than 100 families for the Palghar police to wake up from its slumber and raid around 40 illicit liquor manufacturing units to confiscate and destroy hooch worth lakhs. These hooch manufacturing units, locally known as Haath Bhatti, had been operating in Palghar district for more than 10 months or so and had a smooth network which comprised of government officials and local goons who churned out lakhs of rupees on a monthly basis according to sources. It is not only Mumbai’s police department but also the cops from the satellite cities who have now panicked and are living in a constant fear as their jobs are in the line of fire.

The Palghar cops have been sweating for the last 48 hours and had formed several teams to comb all the chronic spots in the entire Palghar district and have arrested around 20 accused and booked them under 65(E) of Bombay prohibition act. The number of arrests is definitely very few as compared to the raids being conducted and insiders confirm that a few lucky ones might have been tipped off. The places which have been raided in Palghar district were Mokhada, Wada, Kelwe, Manor, Vikramgarh, Saatpati, Tarapur, Vangaon, Nalasopara, Jawhar, Tulinj, Kasa, Palghar, Waliv, Dahanu, Vasai and Safale. The most surprising part of these raids was that the illicit hooch didn’t spare the city either as hooch manufacturing units were found in slums of Nalasopara and Virar also.  Mostly these units were had a set up in marshy lands and deep in jungles of Vasai.

Sources confirm that lakhs of liters of illicit poisonous hooch was destroyed which was stored into several drums of various sizes ranging from 5ltrs to 200ltrs. More arrests are likely to be made as further investigations are on. While speaking to FPJ, the Palghar S P Sharda Raut denied any intelligence failure on part of Palghar police and also said that Palghar cannot be tagged as a den for hooch manufacture.

Blatant Smuggling Unearthed

While cops were busy raiding the illicit liquor manufacturing spots they also stumbled upon cache of liquor being smuggled from the Union Territory Daman to Mumbai via Vasai blatantly in broad day light. They were in a shock to find a huge cache stuffed in a 3-wheeler, DD-03-A-7793, which was being driven by a handicap, and was arrested from Gholvad in Dahanu.  This liquor cache comprised of beer boxes, whiskey and premium scotch bottles and it was being wondered for how long this was happening and the number of officials involved in the smooth passage being provided all these days. This also exposes a major glitch when it comes to patrolling the NH-8 highway (Mumbai – Ahmedabad) which connects Vasai, Bhiwandi, Thane and Mumbai. He was booked under the Bombay prohibition act of 65(E), 81 and 108 and leads were expected as further investigations are on.
