Mumbai : The Congress and the NCP have decided to pose a united opposition to the BJP in the upcoming legislative council elections. Leaders from the two parties will meet at Nagpur on Sunday and take the final call on seat-sharing, MPCC president Ashok Chavan told FPJ on Saturday.

While the Congress needs to deal with NCP’s demand of larger share, it also has to prevent the possibility of rebellion from within. The biennial election for State Legislative Council (LC) from local self government bodies is scheduled on December 27. The last date of filing of nomination is December 9.

Seat sharing talks had not made any headway due to deadlock over Solapur and Ahmednagar seats, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Ashok Chavan said. “Talks are on and we expect the pact would be final tomorrow [Sunday],” he said.

The terms of following legislative council members end on January 1, 2016, Amrish Patel (Dhule-Nandurbar), Mahadev Mahadik (Kolhapur), Rajendra Mulak (Nagpur) and Bhai Jagtap (Mumbai), all from the Congress. Two Sena members, state environment minister Ramdas Kadam (Mumbai) and Gopikishan Bajoria (Akola Washim Buldhana), will also retire on the same day. NCP’s Deepak Salunke (Solapur) and NCP backed Independent Arun Jagtap (Ahmednagar) also retire on January 1.

Congress sources said the party wants to contest in Solapur and is ready to give up Nagpur, Akola-Buldhana-Washim. However, an NCP office-bearer said the party is unlikely to give up the Solapur seat.

Last time, the Congress had contested five seats (Mumbai, Kolhapur, Dhule, Nandurbar and Ahmednagar) while the NCP had contested Solapur and Akola-Washim-Buldhana. Congress won four seats, while an NCP rebel clinched the Ahmednagar seat.
