Bhayandar : Irate over the twin-city being denied metro rail services, the Mira Bhayandar unit of the Congress party in an apparent move to mobilise public support launched a three-day signature campaign.

Speaking to the media, Congress MLC Muzaffar Hussain said: “Considering the rapid development and population growth of the twin-city, which has now already crossed the 12 lakh mark, the Congress-led Democratic Front government in its regime had chalked out an elaborate plan to extend the Mumbai Metro project up to Mira-Bhayandar and beyond. We were shocked to learn that our region had been conveniently dropped from the much needed service.”

The existing suburban rail system is under extreme pressure and the bus system is limited to providing feeder services to railway stations, he said. “We are getting an encouraging response from people. The compilation of signatures along with our memorandum will be handed over to the CM and if the government does not relent and extend the services, we will have no other option but to launch an intensified agitation,” said Congress district president Anil Sawant.
