Won’t contest state election from Panvel

Mumbai : Prashant Thakur, Congress MLA from Panvel resigned of Friday as a mark of protest against the government’s failure to do away with the toll plaza at Kharghar. He said that he won’t be contesting the assembly election from Panvel now.

Kharghar toll plaza on the renewed Panvel-Sion highway had become a contentious issue in the Navi Mumbai-Panvel area for past few months. Keeping in view of the public opinion, all the political parties have been demanding that the toll plaza be removed. Thakur had also resorted to agitation over the issue. But, the government decided to go ahead with the PWD’s proposal to raise Rs.1200 cr spent on widening of the road under BOT.

After Thakur’s agitation in the month of July, a committee was set to study the issue and come up with solution. The committee report suggested that the contractor be paid in full to do away with the toll plaza. But, no decision was taken in this regard. When Thakur learnt that the elections would be announced today, he resigned from the assembly membership.
