Mumbai :  A 33-year-old woman in a local train narrowly escaped being blinded in one eye after being hit by a water balloon between Bhayandar and Mira Road on Thursday morning.

According to the railway police, the woman, Vaishali Damania (33), boarded the 9:35 am Dadar-bound local train from Bhayandar. She was on the footboard of the ladies compartment when the balloon was hurled near the Lodha Complex area.

Vaishali, who suffered severe injuries to her left eye, was helped off the train at Mira Road station by fellow commuters and rushed to the Umrao Hospital where timely treatment by on-duty doctors saved her vision.

“Vaishali has sustained severe internal injuries to her left eye, however her vision had been restored and she will have normal eye sight in a few days.” said Dr Abdul Hamid.

A resident of Shiv-Shakthi Nagar in the Balaram Patil Road area of Bhayandar (east), Vaishali, works at a garment manufacturing unit in Borivali.

Meanwhile a case has been registered against unknown miscreants. While the police claim to have intensified vigil across railway tracks to prevent such incidents, hurling water filled balloons at commuters on board trains becomes recurring nuisance in the Holi festival.
