Mumbai : Public Information Service (PSI) is set to erase the cloud of uncertainty over the arrival of BEST buses at their respective locations. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transportation (BEST) intends to cover all its 4,287 buses under PSI as stated in the budget.
The exact location of the buses will now be just a click away, following the BEST decision to install the PSI system in all its buses. At present PSI is installed in 1,000 BEST buses, through which a passenger can know the exact location of a bus by sending a message from their mobile phones.
However, certain members of the committee were uncertain about the success of the project. They were of the opinion that the system may also end up deterring passengers from using the service. The members also pointed out that the service had to be made more commuter-friendly.
The committee members blamed the BEST undertaking for not publicising the services present for the customers. The BEST has allotted Rs 124 crore for customer care establishment. The budget for the customer care establishment has been increasing over the years from Rs 78 crore in 2010-11 to Rs 117 crore in 2013-14, which then was upgraded to Rs 124 crore by the General Manager office.
Members suggested that the amount be used to provide better services to passengers including newspapers and water. Also the existing customer helpline is not very useful, as too often the users have to struggle to get their complaints registered.
Kedar Hombalkar, a committee member said, “A commuter cannot use internet while driving himself, but while travelling in a public transport the same will be an advantage. This will encourage commuters to use the service
