Mumbai: Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria met Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte on the need to gain police protection for forceful eviction of people from dilapidated buildings, taking action against water mafia, unauthorised construction and removal of unauthorised hawkers from the city. The issue of non-payment of water bills by the police was also discussed.

Regarding the coordination meeting held at the BMC head office on Friday, Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said, “The Municipal Commissioner and several other senior civic officials were present at the meeting. We discussed the provision of manpower from the police force to BMC to help evict encroachers, bandobast for Ganeshotsav and the coordination system for the same.”

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation staff will soon require heavy police protection for several activities it will undertake in the next couple of months.

The civic staff will need police officials for evicting residents from dilapidated buildings. Kunte said, “After the Bombay High Court’s ruling in the BMC’s favour, we can forcefully evict residents from old and dangerous buildings.  –Staff reporter
