Civic hospitals in city adding infra to treat more patients

Mumbai : The year 2015 may see a major overhaul when it comes to public health. Civic hospitals such as JJ Hospital in Byculla, Bhagwati Hospital in Borivali, R N Cooper Hospital in Juhu and Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi will be witnessing expansions and additions to their already existing infrastructure in order to cater to more patients.

The Medical College attached to R N Cooper hospital which will be started by June 2015 will be the first medical college to come up in western suburbs. “For the beginning, the college will have first year medical students only”, said Dr. Suhasini Nagda, Director for major hospitals in the BMC.

Bhagwati hospital in Borivali will now accommodate 1,000 beds as compared to the pre-vious 373 beds. It will be ready by September 2015. “We are trying to get recognition from the Medical Council of India (MCI) for medical college of the hospital. Also, the work for medical college of Shatabdi hospital in Govandi is in the pipeline and if things go as planned, then very soon, the students will be able to benefit out of it”, added Nagda.

JJ hospital will too soon wit-ness a new building too. “The new building will look after the niche facilities and offer treat-ments like kidney, bone mar-row and liver transplants at a much affordable cost. Also, it will include 300 beds for critical care unit and 800 beds for other wards. The work will most probably start by Jan. 2015 and hopefully this will bring more relief to the patients”, said Tatya-rao Lahane, Dean of JJ hospital.
