Mumbai : Two senior citizens were injured in the wee hours of Friday morning as yet another major fire broke out in the city, in a commercial-residential complex in Dadar (West).

Friday witnessed three separate fires in three places in Mumbai. The second incident took place at a slum in Kandivli area, and eight fire fighters were rushed to the spot.

The third incident took place in a commercial complex at Lower Parel. No casualties or injuries were reported in these two fires.

Incidentally, Friday was the third consecutive day of the week when fire has been reported in the city. No casualties have been reported in any of the incidents.

At Dadar, the two injured, a man and a woman, were found unconscious on an upper floor of the building by firemen and were rushed to KEM hospital and are reported to be in a stable condition.

Ahmed Umar building, which is about a hundred years old, is located near the flower market in Dadar and was consumed by fire at 2.56 am. The fire brigade reported it as a Number 2 fire call. Sixteen fire engines, eight water tankers and 14 water jets were rushed to the spot. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a short-circuit in the basement.

The fire spread across 17 shops and an eatery on the ground floor and subsequently to the top four floors. Around 60 persons were trapped in houses on the four upper floors of the building, as the wooden staircase also caught fire. They were safely rescued by the fire brigade.

The fire destroyed garments, computers, stock of wedding cards, household articles and the entire building is charred. It took the fire brigade over three hours to douse the fire which came under control at about 7.30 am on Friday.

The BMC has cordoned off the area surrounding the building as it tries to ascertain the cause of the fire and the extent of damage caused.

On asked if any action will be taken against the owner of the building, Chief Fire Officer P Rahangdale said: “The fire occurred as it was an old building. The fire brigade takes action in case of illegalities. After the BMC determines if there were any illegalities in the building, the fire brigade will take appropriate action.”
