Thanks to reckless demolition, perfectly legal structures have developed cracks in a housing complex in Mira Road
Bhayandar : Due to recent pull down of illegal structures caused by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) squad, perilous cracks have developed in a building adjacent to an illegal structure which was razed just last week. The MBMC had demolished a Ground+4 structure which had illegally sprung in a RG marked plot in the Kanakia Complex area of Mira Road. The squad pressed the services of a JCB whose operator, unmindful about its impact on the adjacent structure, continued giving huge jolts to create holes on the illegal one.
According to locals, the building had been partly demolished in the year 2006; however construction began in December last year.
“We had not only intimated the civic administration about the illegal re-construction, but also requested them to take precautionary measures while razing the structure, so as to ensure that the nearby structures are not harmed. But our pleas went unheeded.” alleged society chairman Vivita Naik.
It should be noted that in a similar incident, the owner of an industrial unit in Bhayandar (east) had incurred huge losses after the part of an illegal structure being demolished by the MBMC came crashing down on his premises. This apart from the tragic case in which two JCB operators were buried alive three years back while trying to pull down an illegal structure in the utmost unprofessional manner. All these instances have exposed the chinks in the demolition system of the MBMC which allegedly deploys unskilled JCB operators and daily wage labourers for demolition activities.
