Mumbai :  The freak railway accident case involving two 25-year-old professionals working with a Goregaon-based ad agency has unravelled.

According to the police, Jeremy Fernandes, who died on the spot, and Niyanti  Mirjankar, who sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment in the ICCU ward of the Holy Family hospital, didn’t fall from the train but were hit by a local train between Khar and Santacruz while they walking on the tracks searching for Mirjankar’s mobile phone.

According to the police, railway pole thieves, Ajay Waghri (21) and Kolanji Krushna Velu (21), had struck at Mirjankar with a stick while she was standing near the gate of the first class compartment.

As soon as the phone fell from her hand, the duo picked it up and tried to flee. Interestingly, a man was run over by a local train around the same time and hence their train slowed down; when it stopped for a while, Fernandes and Mirjankar got down from the train to look out for the assailants and, more important, retrieve the phone.

While scouring for the miscreants in the dark on the tracks at around 9.30 pm, Fernandes was run over by another train, while Mirjankar got severely injured.

Cops in the vicinity spott-ed Waghri and Velu and detained them, as they were looking out for them in another mobile theft case. The cops were further astounded when they found Mirjankar’s mobile in the duo’s possession.

On interrogation, Anil Devle, API, GRP Western Region, and his team found out what had exactly transpired on the fateful night of June 30, and they arrested the duo under Section 394 and 34 of the IPC and Section 152 of Railway Act.

“We have traced Mirjankar’s phone, and arrested two accused. They are in our custody. We are still waiting for the girl to speak to us about the exact sequence of events,” said Assistant Police Commissioner Pradeep Bijwe (Western Railway).
