Mumbai : The long-pending process to bring Mumbai under CCTV surveillance began on Saturday when the state government made an initial payment to the engineering and construction major, Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

An MoU signed between the state government and L&T last month had decided upon the cost of the project to be Rs 949 crore. According to the conditions of the MoU, the company was paid Rs 46 crore as mobilisation advance on Saturday, the government’s decision has said.

The company had applied for a bank guarantee of Rs. 9.49 crore and had made a demand for the payment of mobilisation advance. They have been paid 10 per cent of the CAPEX, which amounts to around Rs 46 crore, the decision says. The work to install 6,000 CCTVs across the city and suburbs is expected to be completed by September 2016.

The project was first proposed during the NCP-Congress regime post the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai, but could not be moved ahead despite bids being called for four times as tenders did not receive responses from companies. The BJP-led government, after coming to power last year, formed a high-power committee to push the project forward and the contract for the same was signed on the occasion of the state government completing 100 days.

In the first phase, the installation of CCTVs in south Mumbai is expected to be completed by November this year, while north and east Mumbai will be covered by April next year, and central and west Mumbai will be covered by September, 2016.
