Mumbai : One more cadaver donation was reported on Saturday when the family of a 48-year-old man agreed to donate his liver and kidneys to save three lives. The liver and one kidney were donated to two patients of Ambani hospital whereas the other kidney went to Bombay Hospital. With this, the number of cadaver donations in the city has gone up to 38.

The donor was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital where he breathed his last owing to posterior circulation stroke. Following which, when he was declared brain-dead, the transplant coordinators at the hospital approached his family to explain about organ donation and its process. After the family gave consent for donating liver and both the kidneys, the hospital donated his organs to the three end-stage patients who were suffering from kidney and liver failure diseases.

As compared to earlier trend, this year the city has witnessed an unprecedented rise in cadaver donations. Further, the city doctors state that civic hospitals could be major contributors in cadaver donation considering the huge load of surgeries conducted by these hospitals. They add that civic hospitals doctors need training for identifying brain-dead patients and counselling the relatives in order to turn brain-dead patients into successful cadaver donors.
