Mumbai: The veil is yet be pulled over the burqa ban controversy that was unveiled by the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana on Thursday. On Saturday, a complaint was filed at Santacruz police station demanding the registration of an FIR against Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Saamana executive editor Sanjay Raut and Anil Tiwari, resident editor, Dopahar Ka Saamna, for hurting religious sentiments. The Sena leadership has since, distanced itself from Raut’s demand for the burqa ban.
On May 1, Saamana and Dophar Ka Saamna had published editorials demanding a burqa ban in the backdrop of a similar ban by Sri Lanka after the Easter bombings. The editorial, titled, ‘After ‘Ravan’s Lanka’, ‘Ram’s Ayodhya’ should make veils and burqa illegal’ had faced a lot of public flak and there was a strain in relations with its alliance partner, the BJP. –Staff Reporter
