Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has to set up a team in each of its 24 wards based on the direction received from the BMC Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi to look out for people who are putting garbage on the roads. The team will also consists of policemen, as quick action will be taken according to the Bombay Police Act 1951. Along with the formation of the team, iron grills will be set in between the gutters to find out from which part the garbage has come. BMC and Mumbai Police team jointly had started to impose fines of Rs 200 on people who were seen throwing garbage in the nullah. Its been only a few days since this drive has been started and BMC has already collected Rs 2,94,600 as fine. In order to create awareness amongst people, BMC has put hoarding with message to not put garbage in gutters.
According to BMC officials, this drive is to ensure that the sewage does not get clogged during monsoon due to the trash. The team has been ordered to take pictures and videos of people throwing garbage in gutter and also collect fine from them. Till now the maximum fine amount of Rs 96000 has been collected from areas like Mankhurd, Govandi, Shivaji Nagar etc. from M/East ward. After M/East ward comes the G/ South ward's Rs 32500 collected as fine from areas like Worli, Worli Koli wada, Lower Parel, NM Joshi Marg, Senapati Bapat Marg etc. It is followed by Rs 30000 collected from L ward and Rs 24000 rom the R South ward.
