Mumbai : The wedding plans of a family in suburban Mumbai came to a naught after the 23-year-old bride-to-be lost her life in a freak accident in the Pathanwadi area of Malad East on Sunday evening.
Aaliya Waradia, a resident of Humera Park colony in Pathanwadi, Kurar, Malad East, had gone to the nearby Al-Mujalfa apartment to inquire about mehendi artists on Saturday evening. She was supposed to get married next week on Monday and selecting a mehendi artist was one of the many pressing tasks at the young woman’s hands.
“At around 8 pm, when she and her mother, who had accompanied her to the apartment, were at the ground floor of the building, Aaliya got into the lift. She was waiting for her mother to step in and was calling out to her when the automatic doors of the lift closed and her neck got stuck between them,” said the senior police inspector of Kurar police station, J N Kathe.
As the doors of the lift closed in on the helpless woman, the lift started moving upwards, and her head was simultaneously crushed between the doors and banged against the ceiling of the first floor. All the while, Aaliya’s mother watched helplessly as her daughter inched closer to death. An alarm was raised by the residents of the building; they and the people from the nearby area manually stopped the lift, prised open its doors and extracted Aaliya’s lifeless body.
“She was rushed to the nearest hospital but declared dead before admission. She had suffered grievous head and neck injuries. Several parts of the rest of the body too were injured,” Kathe said.
The Kurar police have registered an Accidental Death Report and are investigating the case. It is suspected that the lift closed suddenly and started moving up due to some glitch. Further action in the case will be taken after investigations are over and the lift inspector of the building submits his report.
