Palghar : Closed to 50 per cent voters used their franchise in the elections for the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) on Sunday. Rains since early morning affected the voting for a short while which picked up after intensity of rains reduced.
There was an increase in vote percentage as compared to the last election which was only 42.79% with 89 seats to be contested as compared to 115 seats this time. The elections were peaceful without any instance of violence as adequate police force was deployed at every polling booth.
In the morning, one could see voters lined up holding umbrellas to cast their votes at few polling stations while at few others less number of voters appeared and waited for the rain to stop. It was only when intensity of the rain reduced did the voters walk out to cast their votes.
Sources confirmed that voting percentage was more in the villages as compared to certain pockets in the city.
The fate of 369 candidates was sealed in the EVMs and all would be anxiously waiting for June 16 when the results are to be announced. All the political parties have claimed that they will triumph as increase in vote means people have opted for change.
