Mumbai: The prohibition of digging a bore-well more than 200 feet deep is an ideal law, but it is difficult to implement as the government machinery cannot keep a tab on farmers and bore-well machines in rural areas, according to an expert.
Jayaji Paikar, who has been promoting rural development through organic farming for the past two decades, added that the state needs to take multi-prong actions, like social awareness and recharging old wells by water conservation. He was addressing a talk on the issue of ‘Let Us Join Hands for Rural Development’ organised by Observer Research Foundation on Friday.
Paikar said, “Only making laws does not solve drought-related problems. The same is applicable with the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Bill amendment, which prohibits the slaughter of bulls and bullocks. If the state really wants to increase the number of bulls and bullocks, then it should assist in providing fodder and water in drought-affected areas and subsidy for the construction of sheds for animals.”
