Mumbai: Students are in a fix because they have been kept on the waitlist for self-financed courses in reputed colleges even after the third and final lists for degree admissions was declared on Monday.

In every major college, more than 20 students are on the waitlist. Cut-offs for the First Year Bachelor of Management Studies (FYBMS), Mass Media (FYBMM) and Arts (FYBA) courses have stood above 80 per cent.

The cut-offs for the courses dipped by four to five per cent in the third round as compared to the second merit list. It stood at 92 per cent for BMM at Jai Hind College, Churchgate, 90 per cent at KC College, 88 per cent at HR College and 81.48 per cent at St Xavier’s College, Fort.

While for FYBMS, the cut-offs stood at 88.5 per cent at DG Ruparel College, Matunga, 88 per cent at Wilson College, Charni Road, 87.4 per cent at St Andrew’s College, Bandra and 85 per cent at Sydenham College, Churchgate.

Students claim there are limited seats in these reputed colleges and an increasing demand for these courses have led to higher cut-offs even in the final list. Laurel Devasi, a student, said, “It is the final list and still cut-offs are above 85 per cent, how are we supposed to get admissions?”

Up to 50 students from various streams have been kept on the waitlist for each of the courses in reputed colleges. The principal of a South Mumbai college, said,

“We have kept students on the waitlist as we have a large number applying for BMM and BMS courses. Students ought to realise waitlist admissions are entirely based on availability of seats after the completion of the admission process.”

The cut-offs have stood at a higher percentage for Bachelor of Arts (FYBA) and Commerce (FYBCom) while dipped to a low between 50 and 60 per cent for Science (FYBSc).

The cut-offs for FYBCom stood at 92.20 per cent at HR College and 86 per cent at Sydenham College while for FYBA, it was 87 per cent at KC College. There was no third list for FYBA at Jai Hind College.

With fewer seats left, the cut-offs for FYBSc stood at 50 per cent at Jai Hind College, 58 per cent at KC College and 79 per cent at Ruia College, Matunga. Manjushri Chettiar, a senior teacher, said,

“To be on the safer side, students should try in other colleges, especially if they are on the waitlist. The waitlist is a tricky gamble where students get a seat only if there is a vacancy or if some student withdraws admission.”
