Will engage citizens to keep a check on water-borne diseases, hospitals asked to gear up to treat patients with dengue and malaria

Mumbai : With an objective of keeping a check and to control the diseases such as dengue, malaria and diarrhoea, which are more prominent in monsoon season, the BMC’s health department has planned to intensify its programme against monsoon-related diseases in the city.

The administration has decided to involve communities – who in turn will include people from different parts of the city – who will keep a watch on the diseases in their area and update civic officials about it. Also, the BMC has directed all the hospitals to make available all the necessary facilities for the treatment of the patients.

The civic officials’ believe that the city witnesses unprecedented cases of dengue and malaria during monsoon season, owing to which they have to be pre-monsoon prepared to tackle these diseases. Following which, they have decided to strengthen and expand their programmes and services related to monsoon-related diseases in the city.

The BMC health officials said that they have been discussing a lot of plans and ways to combat the diseases and they will be focusing on prevention and treatment. Also, they will do surveillance in the areas and spread awareness about the disease.

Shedding more light on the matter, Dr Suhasini Nagda, director of BMC hospitals said, “Our programme is in its preliminary stage and we are planning ways to deal with the situation. However, through our programme, we will be educating people about the disease and will also ask for their participation. So, in this way, people will keep a tab of these diseases in their area and keep us updated. We will be in touch with people, communities and hospitals to fight the battle against monsoon-diseases.”
