It becomes the first municipal corporation in the country to have succeeded in the endeavour
Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation initiated its lake tapping activity at the Modak Sagar lake here on Wednesday at the hands of Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackerey.
Speaking on the occasion, Thackerey congratulated the BMC and its engineers for becoming the first municipal corporation in the country to have succeeded in the endeavour.
Lake tapping is a procedure which ensures water in the depths of a lake is sucked out at tremednous speed. Thus, a portion from Modak Sagar’s stocks which was hitherto inaccessible to the city will be made available, resulting in no water cuts in the future. This is the second lake to be tapped in the state after Koyna lake and was therefore done with technical support of the Koyna dam engineers.
Lake tapping is an important step for the city and the BMC now proposes to divert waters of the Gargai dam here in the future.
Also present on the occasion were Mayor Sunil Prabhu, Deputy Mayor Mohan Mithbavkar, municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte and other dignitaries.
