Mumbai: With the increasing number of vehicles in the city, the parking issue has also increased. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up an independent parking authority to resolve the parking issue in the city.
The authority will involve a cost of Rs64.68 lakh and will be entrusted to manage, control and plan the public transport site and road-based parking facilities under BMC’s jurisdiction.
The development plan and the promotion rules of the city will be set up at the BMC level for proper planning of parking in the space, which falls under the jurisdiction of the BMC under BMC rules 2034.
A proposal for the formation of the parking authority will be placed in the standing committee meeting which will be held on Friday. The parking authority will manage the parking issue, the parking areas and the fines will be declared by the Parking authority.
In some cities, such initiatives have already started, to empower the traffic power system in the city.
Similarly, the BMC has constituted a committee to create a parking authority. This committee will include additional commissioner, deputy commissioner, sub regional transport officer, assistant commissioner of police and deputy chief engineer.
The parking authority will conduct tasks like management of the parking system in the city, advertisement of the parking spaces, issuing parking passes, promotion and usage of the solar system.
BMC has appointed the M/s Tata Institute of Social Sciences for the work. This organisation will use the Geographical Information System (GIS) and provide information and maps. The proposal for the same is sent for approval in the next standing committee meeting.
