Mumbai : The BMC may make it mandatory to construct toilets on the premises of sites of construction or redevelopment of buildings hosting shops and commercial offices.
Moreover, unless this condition is met, the civic body will refuse to clear the Intimation of Disapproval certificate for the concerned party.
This proposal has been tabled before the civic body’s improvement’s committee and will be discussed on Tuesday.
If passed, this may become an essential step in BMC chief Ajoy Mehta’s policy to end open defecation in the city.
The proposal suggests that there should be one toilet for every 25 people, one toilet for every 15 women and one latrine for every 25 people in a commercial complex.
The proposal states that non-availability of this provision often leads to members using public spaces to relieve themselves. This poses serious health hazards for all nearby residents and pollutes the air, the environment and the streets.
Also, if the existing toilet does not belong to the building’s compound, no company/office takes up responsibility for its maintenance, which compounds the problem.
