Mumbai : The law might get harsher for those builders who deny houses to certain residents targeting them for belonging to a particular caste, religion or for meat-eating habits.
It has been proposed before the BMC’s improvements committee that the civic body should effectively cancel the Commencement Certificate, Intimation of disapproval along with all other documents required for pursuing construction. The civic body may also decide to stop water supply to the respective housing colonies if such a case is reported against them.
The proposal has been introduced on the basis of a point of order introduced by MNS corporator and chief Sandeep Deshpande in the civic body’s standing committee some time ago. He pointed out that incidents of discrimination against Marathi people (who often do eat meat) are on the rise . Deshpande said this discrimination is often very subtle, as it is a verbal denial to rent or sell living space. The victims are not able to produce any proof of the incident and they go unreported.
To deal with thes problem within the ambit of law, it has been suggested the BMC make rules stricter.
