Mumbai : Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta said the BMC will take necessary action against errant contractors and if the need arises, file an FIR against those who have been negligent about cleaning nullahs.
He confirmed that an enquiry will be conducted against contractors responsible for (not) cleaning Mumbai’s nullahs before the rains. He assured corporators that depending on the findings of the committee, the BMC will decide the intensity of the action to be taken against the contractors.
Mehta said, “We will lodge an FIR against the offenders if the need arises, or we will blacklist them from getting any future contracts from the civic body. However, we first need to conduct an impartial enquiry.”
An enquiry will also be conducted to figure out where the administration fell short in tackling the flooding problem in the city, so that such a situation does not arise again next year. He said, “Besides, we will complete work at the Gazdarbandh Pumping station before November this year, so the city is even better prepared for next year’s monsoon.”
Devendra Amberkar, leader of opposition in the BMC, demanded that the administration provide a status update about the Britannia Pumping Station, which will tackle the flooding problem at Hindmata and Dadar areas.
It is expected to begin functioning next year. Amidst much confusion in the general body meeting of the BMC on Tuesday, the civic body finally addressed the flooding problem in the city.
