Mumbai : After High Court order, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to supply water to all those slums and shanties that have been illegally constructed in the city after January 2000. It will therefore revise the current water charges and the policy. The standing committee will decide on the issue in its next meeting.

The High Court directed the State government to rehabilitate the families residing in these illegal shanties, it also states that meanwhile, these families should be given proper water supply until they are not been rehabilitated. However, they will be charged higher rates than those slums that have come up before 2000. Slum-dwellers across the city are charged Rs 3.24 per thousand litres. These shanties will be charged Rs 4.32 per thousand litre.

High Court had directed all the civic bodies across the state to provide water supply to shanties in their jurisdiction, the BMC had made plans for the same. Official sources said it has been taken up by the civic body again after much debate.

Meanwhile, those shanties standing on the footpath or the road, those built on private land and yet to declared as slum, those coming in the way of development work taken up by the State government or the BMC, have been excluded from this scheme.
