Citizens are against this proposal of nightlife, says MLA Raj Purohit

Mumbai : Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Raj Purohit opposed the idea of promoting nightlife in Mumbai as even as Ashish Shelar demanded to set up a committee of retired officials to study the proposed Development Plan of the city.

“Citizens are against this proposal of nightlife. When there are issues of security of women during the daytime what will happen in the night. Those who want to enjoy nightlife can still go to five star hotels,” Purohit said as he initiated a debate in assembly to discuss issues related to Mumbai on Wednesday. There is confusion and fear among the people about what is nightlife, he added.

Purohit said whether it is pay and parking policy, nightlife or Metro 3 project, citizens and elected representatives have not been taken into confidence because of which there is opposition to such moves. “Government has to keep the common man at the centre of all its endeavours,” he said.

Purohit also demanded that ward officials and local senior police inspector be held accountable for illegal activities happening in their respective areas. He said Mumbai was not getting adequate share from central funds despite the metropolis being the largest contributor to the treasury. “The Modi government has increased the states’ share and Mumbai will get its due,” he said.

Calling for proper co-ordination among different agencies responsible for development of Mumbai, Purohit said the “conspiracy of Mumbai being separated from Maharashtra” is raised for political reasons. “None can separate the city from Maharashtra because Sanyukta Maharashtra with Mumbai as the capital city has come after putting up a huge fight and shedding blood,” he said.

The legislator also felt scrapping of CRZ would go a long way in expediting infrastructure upgradation and redevelopment.

Purohit also asked the government to tap the tourism potential in Mumbai to its fullest and utilise FSI only for public utilities. “FSI is not a private limited property,” he added and called for performance audit of bureaucracy responsible for Mumbai’s administration.

Shelar criticises DP process

BJP Mumbai unit president MLA Ashish Shelar criticised the process followed in bringing out the Development Plan. “People are scared and are looking at the DP with suspicion. The government should appoint a committee of retired bureaucrats to study the plan,” Shelar said. He also demanded that the plan be published in Marathi and the limit to call suggestions from citizen be increased by 60 days.

Varsha Gaikwad (Congress) said instead of nightlife, the government should concentrate on public toilets for women in the city. Coming down heavily of the proposed development plan, Gaikwad said that converting non-development zone into development zone and not keeping policy for recreation and playgrounds was not in interest of ordinary citizens of Mumbai.

Chhagan Bhujbal (NCP) said lakhs of slum-dwellers will be displaced due to the centre’s proposal to develop Bombay port trust (MbPT) land commercially. He asked the government to take steps to rehabilitate the slum-dwellers.
