Mumbai : The Bharatuiya Janata Party leaders on Friday demanded that all non-Maharashtrian officers in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) should take Marathi language lessons to improve their language skills.
Manoj Kotak, BJP leader in the BMC said “Mumbai’s Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta himself, and two out of the four Assistant Municipal Commissioners Sanjay Mukherjee and SVR Shrinivas, are non-Maharashtrians. Even though they can speak the language, they do not understand its nuances. They must be given language lessons every morning.”
Trushna Vishwasrao, Leader of the House said “In fact, we must work towards completely getting rid of English language usage in the civic body’s proceedings.
This statement has come as a reaction to Ajoy Mehta’s circular to all departments of the civic body, that a simplified version of Marathi should be used for all application forms for various civic services at BMC.
Mehta’s circular intends to simplify the process for citizens seeking information or dealing with the civic body, who find the language used in its proceedings cumbersome.
