Bhayandar: A Punjab-based farmer was robbed by a trio under the false pretext of giving him a job and facilitating his trip to the United States.

According to police, the victim, identified as Gurvinder Jagpal Singh (28), is a farmer from Patiala district. In his complaint to the police, Gurvinder Singh stated that he intended to work at his maternal uncle’s liquor trading firm in California. He came into contact with one of the accused who identified himself as Ramesh in Amritsar.

Offering his assistance to fulfil his dreams of working abroad, Ramesh took away Gurvinder’s documents including passport, Aadhaar and PAN card along with Rs3,000 as processing documentation fees. Last week, the accused called up Gurvinder and told him to arrange $10,000 (around Rs6.5 lakh) to facilitate his visa and complete other formalities.

After making the financial arrangements, Gurvinder met Ramesh at the Amritsar airport from where both flew to Mumbai on May 9. Upon reaching Mumbai, the accused, along with his two unidentified accomplices, accosted Gurvinder to a lodge in Kashimira.

After consuming the food, which was apparently spiked with sedatives, Gurvinder fell unconscious, following which the trio vanished with his bag containing the American currency and other important documents. Gurvinder regained his senses only to find himself admitted at a local hospital.

It may be recalled that two persons were robbed using a similar modus operandi at a lodge in Kashimira early this month.  Meanwhile, a case under sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, with intent to commit an offence) and 380 (theft) of the IPC has been registered against the miscreants at the Kashimira police station.
