Mumbai: The Bhandup molestation victim, Rani Patil (name changed), who set herself on fire on July 1 after being repeatedly molested by her neighbour for more than a month, succumbed to her injuries a week later on Tuesday at the Burns Unit of the Sion hospital. She had suffered 75% burns. “We had already charged Samir Ghugre with attempt to murder along with molestation and rape. He will now be charged with Section 305 of the Indian Penal Code which is punishment for murder and involves a death sentence, or life imprisonment or 10 years imprisonment with fine depending on the crime,” Senior Inspector Chavan of the Bhandup police station said. Patil had set herself on fire by dousing her body with kerosene on Tuesday late afternoon last week when no one was home. The issue about her being molested by Ghugre, 31, who is married and has two children, came to light when her paternal uncle found a note at the house where she gave the reason for taking the extreme step.
