Beef ban: Muslims demand protection under SC/ST Act

Pune: In the background of increasing number of mob lynching cases of members from the minority community for reasons like carrying beef, Muslim organisations have begun demanding they get protection under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (prevention of atrocities) Act, More than 200 activists in Latur on Wednesday gave the presentation to the district collector. More than 10 Muslim organisations in Pune will hold the strike on Friday for the same demand.

More than 200 activists, including Muslims, Dalits, Hindus, Christians from various political parties and social organisations organised a strike in front of district collector’s office in Latur demanding protection of Muslims under Prevention of Atrocities Act. Mohsin Khan, the founder of the Swabhimani Muslim Vikas Sanghatana, that organised the strike said, “We have seen 20 people have been lynched to death by mobs for reasons like transporting beef.”
